What is the problem you are trying to solve? Who does it affect?
To streamline the job application process and enforce/include transparency on both the employer and applicant side. To keep applicants engaged and maintain that line of communication which otherwise leaves applicants feeling dejected.
What is your idea? How does it fix the problem?
Where do I start???? This is amazing AF!. We reinvented the wheel!!! 😼
Our idea is to automate the application process as much as possible to make it easier for employers to provide feedback. Candidates also must feel heard and seen in the whole process from application to onboarding.
How do all the pieces fit together? Does your frontend make requests to your backend? Where does your database fit in?
Due to the time constraint, we used data in JSON files injected as our database. In the future, we will designed a functional backend with an API and a database with careful consideration of things like GDPR. We would also design a schema to hold all relevant data. Alerts would be sent out for new jobs posted on the site and saved on the database. The frontend was built using React x vite.
What did you struggle with? How did you overcome it?
We had to work around a lack of experience in the frontend aspect. Most of our skills are heavily tailored for backend work so it was a bit tough to navigate frontend but despite that, we did a really good job.
For instance, we used Claude for our frontend mockups. This really helped us as our team members are more on the engineering side than the designing so we were able to use our skills (prompt engineering and technical knowledge) to create our solution.
What did you learn? What did you accomplish?
React!!!!⚒️
On a more serious note, we actually did learn how to use React. Most of our team had never played around with it before but towards the end of the project everyone had a real contribution towards the react codebase.
Claude!!!!💡
As mentioned earlier, we learnt how to use Claude as a mockup tool to aid in our idea creation phase.
Friends!!!🫂
We cultivated a close relationship with one another which is an accomplishment in itself. We're all from diverse backgrounds and working with one another was a true fun experience where we all came away with something new.
What are the next steps for your project? How can you improve it?
First steps would be to design a proper backend API for our frontend to call as well as a proper database. We would also refactor our codebase to obey best practices. In addition, we would love to get our existing features up and fully running: e.g. chatting page with employers. There are other features we would love to explore, such as AI-Generated resource section tailored to your feedback you received from the application process. A referral/ recommendation service for people to use and share jobs to people they know would be a good fit. An AI cv extraction tool to prevent rewriting core information from your CV.
